Hello, there my name is Chester Chan (陈立其) I hail from Singapore and I am currently pursuing my degree in Strategic Communications at BYU-Idaho.
My portfolio will be split into 3 sections showcasing my Writing, Photography, and finally my leadership and Management Experience.
Writing
I worked at The Scroll newspaper for two years, starting out as a community reporter for two semesters. I then wrote for special projects for a semester, focusing on sexual assault and domestic abuse nonprofits. After that, I became a regional reporter and was promoted to senior reporter. I then moved to be a marketing manager before being promoted to managing editor, where I served as the second in command below the editor-in-chief.
This experience gave me the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, including writing, editing, reporting, and management.
Photography
I am a freelance photographer with experience in weddings and events.
As a wedding photographer, I have photographed weddings all over the Pacific Northwest. I work with my clients to understand their vision for their wedding day, and I create a custom photography plan to ensure that all of their important moments are captured.
As an events photographer, I have photographed a wide range of events, including corporate events, conferences, trade shows, and social events.
Leadership / Management
As a Managing Editor for the Scroll newspaper, I lead editorial teams and oversee the publishing of all the articles and videos. I am also a certified tutor for AP-style writing and teach a 300-level college course twice a week to 25 students on a variety of topics, including SEO, marketing, writing, reporting, and AP-style writing photography.
I am responsible for developing and implementing editorial strategies, assigning stories, editing content, and ensuring that all deadlines are met.
I teach students the skills they need to become successful writers and journalists. I cover a wide range of topics, including how to research and write stories, how to develop a strong writing style, and how to use AP style writing correctly. I also teach students how to use SEO and marketing techniques to promote their work.
